The Isle of Skye is a haven for the walker and the climber , although our own mountain conquest aspirations are relatively modest. Two walks in particular attracted us when researching Skye, the Quiraing ( above left) and The Old Man of Storr, ( above right).

Quiraing Walk

The day we attempted the Quiraing, it was blowing a gale, cold and with showers threatening. There are any number of routes available and one of these is circular. The history to the Quiraing is that it was a safe haven in years gone by, for people and animals from marauding invaders.

The full circular route shows off this amazing walk, this time the weather was against us and we managed about half of the walk returning the same way to the car parking area, conveniently positioned at a high point in the walk.

Old Man of Storr Walk

The Old Man of Storr stands proud above the road from Portree to Staffin, and parking is on the roadside. The path up to the Old Man is fairly steep although on the return there is a loop to the south which is welcome relief for tired knees.

The views from the Old Man are spectacular, and once returned to terra firma, Skye has views that surprise – the waterfall into the sea – and then the Grand Designs most excellent coffee and chocolate brownie, under the turf roof! Do try if you are passing.
